Joseph David Quinn-Vitabile, a junior at Montclair State University, has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Goldwater Scholarship. Initially enrolling as a Computer Science major due to the university's affordability and proximity to his home in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Quinn-Vitabile expanded his academic pursuits to include astrophysics.
His interest in physics began when he chose it as an elective science course while interning at Johnson & Johnson. "It all happened pretty quickly after that," he remarked about adding a minor in Physics. This decision led him to participate in Professor Shaon Ghosh’s summer research project through the College of Science and Mathematics (CSAM) Summer Research Program.
"The physics department here is great because it’s pretty small," said Quinn-Vitabile. He appreciated the opportunity to engage with faculty members who offered guidance on courses and career paths. His connection with Dr. Ghosh was particularly influential.
Ghosh, part of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration known for detecting gravitational waves, praised Quinn-Vitabile as "among the best undergraduate students" he's encountered. Quinn-Vitabile has contributed significantly to Ghosh's software package GWXtreme by integrating artificial intelligence tools that expedite calculations related to neutron stars.
The rigorous application process for the Goldwater Scholarship required close faculty connections for recommendations. "It’s really important to have close connections with your professors," noted Quinn-Vitabile.
Quinn-Vitabile plans to pursue a PhD program in astrophysics. Ghosh supports this decision: "I would really love for him to go into research [with the LIGO Scientific Collaboration], but it is entirely up to him."
Quinn-Vitabile advises fellow students interested in research: “Try to explore as much as possible as early as possible.” He encourages attending events like research symposiums and engaging with faculty across departments.
