Monica Smith, Director of Transportation at Montclair State University, manages a team of 41 people responsible for the university’s shuttle system. The transportation fleet consists of 17 vehicles, including 11 small buses, six large buses, and one ADA van. On a typical weekday, these vehicles travel nearly 1,000 miles and transport an average of 1,500 passengers, with numbers reaching up to 2,500 during major events.

Smith’s responsibilities include planning and adjusting routes, conducting safety checks, and overseeing daily operations to ensure the university community can move efficiently across campus. “To keep the University’s heart and soul – the students, faculty and staff – moving forward,” Smith said.

Smith commutes from Princeton, New Jersey, where she lives on a ranch with her husband and raises chickens. After work, she returns home to care for her organic garden and orchard, using sustainable practices such as solar power, water reclamation, and composting.

The university encourages prospective students to plan visits and learn more about becoming part of the campus community.
