Montclair State University has announced the launch of its Interdisciplinary School for Social Transformation, which will be part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The new school aims to connect disciplines across the university and place students at the center of addressing major societal challenges through interdisciplinary education, collaborative research, and community partnerships.

“Real problems are never one-dimensional,” said Laura Nicosia, interim director of the Interdisciplinary School for Social Transformation. “Our students learn to approach challenges from multiple angles, developing the adaptability and innovation that today’s world demands.”

The university explained that the creation of this school was driven by a recognition that many significant issues and innovations extend beyond traditional academic boundaries. Coursework will draw on methods and perspectives from various fields to help students succeed in a changing world.

According to Fatma Mili, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, “The new school will further stimulate existing interdisciplinary programs and initiatives and inspire new ones across the university.”

The school is designed for students interested in exploring complex questions using knowledge from different disciplines. Its goal is to prepare graduates with adaptable skills suited for a range of careers such as public policy, healthcare administration, nonprofit leadership, digital communications, wellness advocacy, education, and user experience design.

“Our students will graduate ready to lead with purpose, empathy and vision,” Nicosia added. “By learning to address societal challenges at their roots, they gain the adaptability and problem-solving skills that prepare them for success in careers wherever innovation and leadership are needed.”

In spring 2025, the school introduced a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies program aimed at preparing students for flexible professional paths. Faculty from different areas within Montclair State University will work together on courses offered in three concentrations: Health and Wellness; Technology, Self and Society; and Exploring Human Value, Solving Human Problems.

Health and Wellness focuses on topics like nutrition, public health, and wellness promotion. Technology, Self and Society examines digital culture as well as ethical considerations related to technology. Exploring Human Value addresses social topics such as justice and human rights.

Additionally, starting in September 2025, students can enroll in a new Social Impact Certificate program that requires 13 credits—including an internship—to help them develop practical skills for making positive changes in society.
