Over 180 guests convened on May 8 for Montclair State University’s Donor Celebration, an event held in the School of Communication and Media. The occasion was marked by a program in Presentation Hall followed by a reception offering views of the New York City skyline.
Rita Walters, Vice President for Development and Alumni Engagement, welcomed attendees with a heartfelt message: “This evening is a wonderful opportunity to recognize the important role philanthropy plays in the growth of Montclair State University and in improving the lives of our students and the world around us.” She emphasized the importance of community among donors and celebrating the power of philanthropy.
The guest list included members from various donor societies such as the President’s Club, Carpe Diem Society, and 1908 Loyalty Society. Some of these individuals have been contributing to Montclair annually for over three decades. Donors from Bloomfield College of Montclair State University were also present.
Montclair President Jonathan Koppell shared updates on the university's progress, partnerships, and purpose during his address. He stated, “We believe students from all backgrounds are deserving of a high-quality, affordable education…which Montclair delivers.” Koppell expressed gratitude for their generous support towards achieving their mission.
Koppell also urged attendees to oppose proposed funding cuts that could negatively impact both Bloomfield College and Montclair State University students. He encouraged them to show support for equitable higher education funding in New Jersey by visiting fundmontclairandbloomfield.com.
Greg Collins, chair of the Montclair State University Foundation and alumnus, thanked donors before introducing student speakers who expressed their gratitude towards benefactors. These students highlighted how donations have directly impacted their educational journey at Montclair through scholarships, internships, research opportunities, campus programs, etc.
The evening concluded with performances from Department of Theatre and Dance students who showcased selections from Sophisticated Ladies. As live music played in the background, guests interacted with fellow donors and students.
Walters summarized the evening by stating, “Montclair delivers transformational opportunities to students from all backgrounds, and we are grateful for our community of donors for sharing their time, resources and energy to help make this University everything it can be.”
