Senior Biology major Mariana Luna-Martinez, who will be graduating at Spring Commencement on May 13 at Prudential Center, has been recognized for her exceptional commitment to community service and leadership during her time at Montclair State University. Luna-Martinez's journey from a childhood tragedy to academic success and public service has been shaped by her experiences and the support she received.

Reflecting on her past, Luna-Martinez recalls the impact of her community and family after her childhood home in Newark burned down. She shares, “Even though we had so little, sharing those resources can definitely make a big difference in someone else’s life. My family and also my community have definitely influenced my community and public service. It’s just become second nature at this point.”

Throughout her four years at Montclair, Luna-Martinez has been actively involved in various service projects, including organizing beach cleanups, homebuilding with Habitat for Humanity, and toy drives for underprivileged children. Mikaela Guzman, who supervised Luna-Martinez as Bonner’s intern of Community Partnerships, commends her dedication, saying, “Anywhere you need her, she’s there. She has such natural leadership skills.”

Luna-Martinez's involvement in the Bonner Leader Program and Student Government Association, along with her academic pursuits and multiple jobs, exemplifies her strong work ethic and commitment to making a difference in the community. Guzman notes, “She’s a hub for different connections and gets everybody involved.”

As Luna-Martinez prepares to graduate, she credits Montclair State University and the Bonner program for shaping her future aspirations. Initially majoring in Biology, her experiences in service projects have led her to pursue a master’s in Urban Planning at New York University’s Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Luna-Martinez expresses her gratitude for the opportunities she has received, including a scholarship to help cover half the cost of her master’s tuition.

Ana Garcia, Luna-Martinez's grandmother who inspired her to give back, will be present at Commencement to celebrate her achievements. Luna-Martinez will receive her Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Leadership Development through Civic Engagement, marking the culmination of her academic journey at Montclair State University.

Luna-Martinez's story serves as a testament to the transformative power of education, community support, and dedication to service. As she looks forward to the next chapter in her academic and professional life, her commitment to public service remains unwavering.
