Social Security 2100 legislation will reinvigorate program for the next century

Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09), a senior member of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security, on July 12 joined his colleagues as an original cosponsor and strong supporter of the just-reintroduced Social Security 2100 Act. This watershed piece of legislation would provide a benefit bump for current and future beneficiaries and keep the system strong for generations to come.

“Without question or debate, Social Security is one of the greatest success stories in the history of world government and the very foundation of life for our seniors,” said Congressman Pascrell. “Yet nearly 90 years into its existence, the program is treading water and in desperate need of protection. Inaction is no longer an option and we must enhance Social Security now to ensure its long term survival. My colleague John Larson’s proposal to expand this program is forward thinking and one of the most important bills we will consider this or any other year.

“I remind my colleagues every chance I get: Social Security is not some entitlement but money that Americans paid into and Americans earned. As congressmembers our job is about using government to do good in our neighbors’ daily lives. If we cannot secure Social Security, we can do nothing.

The Social Security 2100 Act provides an across-the-board benefit increase, improves the annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) to reflect seniors’ true costs, repeals the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) that currently penalize many public servants, and provides the Social Security Administration with resources to improve customer service.
