Farce proceeding attempts to deflect for failures under GOP officials
Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09), the Ranking Member of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight, today blasted Republicans’ latest attempt to attack the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and smear President Biden by elevating the unproven allegations of a discredited so-called whistleblower.
“Republican Party leaders will stop at absolutely nothing to attack American tax enforcement and President Biden with political innuendo and unproven claims,” said Congressman Pascrell. “The so-called whistleblower the majority today sought to elevate is another distraction from their failed tax scam agenda. Moreover, the allegations all began under the failed stewardship of Trump IRS boss Charles Rettig, whom Republicans spent years protecting at every turn! Give me a break.
“Today’s committee proceeding was a farce and based on shoddy and incomplete information. The session had nothing to do with fairness or fact-finding but was merely fishing for some weapon, any weapon with which to hobble our government’s fight against rich tax cheats, attack President Biden’s family, and deflect from Republicans’ own failures. Republican sabotage of our tax system and law enforcement processes is further reckless partisan poisoning of our cherished institutions. It is despicable.”
As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight in the 117th Congress and Ranking Member in the 118th Congress, Pascrell has made fixing the IRS with a focus on fairness his top priority.
Pascrell was the first member of Congress to demand Trump IRS head Rettig’s dismissal. On July 7, 2022, Pascrell wrote to President Biden again calling for a new IRS Commissioner, which Biden soon heeded. On March 9, 2023, Pascrell praised the confirmation of Daniel Werfel as the new Commissioner of the IRS.
