Two student news productions from Montclair State University's College of Communication and Media (CCOM) have received 2025 National Edward R. Murrow Awards, presented by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA). The student teams were recognized at the Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala on October 13 at Gotham Hall in New York City.
The Murrow Awards are regarded as among the most prestigious in news and honor local and national stories that adhere to the RTDNA Code of Ethics, demonstrate technical expertise, and highlight journalism’s service to the community. In the Student category, CCOM’s production "Arizona Stories: Border, Water and Politics" won the Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Video Newscast. Another CCOM project, "#FOCUS Democracy: Our Election," earned the award for Excellence in Video Hard News.
For "Arizona Stories," students interviewed asylum seekers and law enforcement at the U.S. southern border, as well as aid workers assisting migrants. They gained access to migrant camps and observed conditions firsthand. In addition to the Murrow Award, "Arizona Stories" had previously been honored with two Student Emmys from the Television Academy Foundation.
"#FOCUS Democracy: Our Election" was part of a News Lab project covering Gen Z’s perspectives on voting and key student concerns. Students involved in #FOCUS projects have also been recipients of Folio Awards.
Keith Strudler, dean of the College of Communication and Media, stated: “We are incredibly proud of our students for earning national Edward R. Murrow Awards, one of the most prestigious honors in journalism. Their storytelling reflects a deep commitment to covering issues that matter – from democracy and elections to immigration – and showcases the exceptional quality of work produced by our students and faculty.”
CCOM students regularly achieve recognition for their work. Journalism and Digital Media students have previously been awarded for reporting on hurricane recovery in Puerto Rico. The student-run radio station, WMSC-FM, is often a national contender for top honors.
Faculty-led field reporting trips provide students with practical experience, such as those that led to "Arizona Stories." With Montclair State University located near New York City, students have access to internships at TV studios, major companies, advertising agencies, PR firms, and sports organizations.
