Montclair State University has been named one of 75 Dream Schools in Jeff Selingo’s new book, "Dream School: Finding the College That’s Right for You." The selection is based on research and a survey of more than 3,000 parents. Selingo highlights institutions where graduates find strong job prospects, supportive communities, and innovative academic programs.

According to Selingo, Montclair State stands out for preparing students for successful careers and offering a sense of community. The university is noted for its higher-than-expected graduation rates, programs that foster belonging, and clear career pathways.

President Jonathan Koppell emphasized the institution's mission: “The value of a Montclair degree as a growing research institution is undeniably strong,” Koppell says. “Great schools prioritize both excellence and accessibility, providing opportunities for students of all backgrounds to engage with one another, grow and impart a positive impact on their communities.”

“At Montclair, we are committed to being a place where all people have a sense of belonging – it’s at the core of our identity,” he adds.

Selingo’s book points out several features at Montclair State that contribute to student success. These include the Office of Student Belonging, which assists first-year, transfer, international, first-generation, and military-affiliated students. The university also offers an accelerated pre-med partnership with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School that supports qualified science majors through automatic advancement to medical school. Programs in Computing and Communication and Media help expand career opportunities for students.

Montclair State also reports six-year graduation rates that are above predictions. Its alumni work at regional employers such as Hackensack Meridian Health, ADP, and Prudential Financial.

Recent national rankings reflect these achievements. In the U.S. News & World Report 2026 Best Colleges list (https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges), Montclair State ranks ninth in Social Mobility among national universities (fifth among public institutions), 177th in Best Value Schools—a jump of 28 places from last year—and ties for 158th among National Universities with recognition for innovation and student support.

In The Wall Street Journal/College Pulse 2026 Best Colleges ranking (https://www.wsj.com/rankings/college-rankings/best-colleges-2026), Montclair State is ranked 67th overall out of 584 colleges and universities nationwide. It is placed 29th among public institutions nationally and recognized as the top public institution in New Jersey (second overall in the state behind Princeton University). The university is also ranked first in New Jersey for Social Mobility (14th overall in the country).

Selingo encourages families to look beyond traditional rankings by focusing on fit, value, and future opportunities—an approach aligned with Montclair State’s commitment to providing inclusive experiences and financial stability.
