Montclair State University's 2025 Commencement ceremony marked a significant moment for the institution, as nine members of Team Rocky graduated. This event was notable for being the largest "Rocky Reveal" in the university's history, with seven individuals stepping out from behind the mascot's costume.
The tradition at Montclair State is to keep the identities of those portraying mascots secret until graduation, often surprising classmates and faculty. This year's ceremony also introduced redesigned versions of the Rocky and Roxy mascots. The new Rocky features a friendlier appearance, while Roxy has undergone a complete transformation.
Roxy has been particularly well-received on campus. Hannah Lindeblad, director of Student Communications, noted, "Everyone loves Roxy," adding that she has received only positive feedback.
Graduates shared their experiences and future plans:
Ciriana Lee Monti spent 3.5 years as Rocky and Handler while earning a BA in Psychology. She enjoyed watching students adapt to the new mascot look and expressed pride in seeing women connect with Roxy. Monti plans to pursue a career as a first responder.
Jordan Fiorentino served as Rocky, Roxy, Uncle Roy, and Handler for three years while studying Family Science and Human Development. Fiorentino took pleasure in developing Roxy's personality beyond just being "Rocky's little sister." Fiorentino will remain at Montclair to complete a Master of Arts in Teaching.
Aly Erario portrayed Rocky, Roxy, and Handler for 2.5 years while majoring in Psychology with a minor in Musical Theatre. Erario valued debuting the new Roxy suit at local events and will intern with Carnival Cruise Line this summer.
Sophia Del Monte was involved for two years as Roxy and Handler while pursuing a BS in Business Administration. Del Monte appreciated exciting students about changes to the mascot program and hopes to work full-time in Human Resources or start a master's program.
Kevin Tay spent one year as Rocky and Handler while studying Communication and Media Studies. Tay found joy in spreading school pride through his role as Rocky and aims to work within entertainment or music marketing.
Anastasia Swan participated for 1.5 years as a Handler while earning a BFA in Theatre: Design, Technology, and Management. Swan valued her growth through team involvement and plans to work on sound design for live theater productions.
Sam Spencer was involved for 1.5 years as Cousin Ricky and handler for both mascots while studying Psychology. Spencer cherished working with Roxy and Pebbles during events like Commencements. Spencer will pursue a master's degree in counseling at Rowan University.
