When Melissa Spigelman's best friend was diagnosed with cancer, it set her on a path to explore more compassionate and innovative treatments for aggressive cancers. Now, as a graduate of Montclair State University with a master's degree in Molecular Biology, Spigelman is combining research, mentorship, and scholarship support to reimagine cancer care.
Spigelman's interest in science began with an inspiring high school biology teacher. Although initially uncertain about her career path, the diagnosis of her friend solidified her commitment to cancer research. "She's okay," Spigelman says, "but at what cost?" This question drives her pursuit of non-invasive treatments.
As a high school senior, Spigelman joined a lab led by Biology Professor Carlos Molina at Montclair State University. Despite feeling overwhelmed initially, she persevered and became an integral part of the lab. "She basically runs my lab," says Molina. Over nearly three years, she has managed various aspects of the lab and trained other students.
In addition to her work in the lab, Spigelman has moderated the University's Women in STEM Summit and presented at various programs. Her experience abroad in Japan through a National Science Foundation program challenged her but ultimately contributed to her growth as a scientist.
Spigelman also co-authors a podcast titled "Everyone Can Be a Scientist!" which has resonated with many high school students who reach out to express their admiration for her work.
Looking ahead, Spigelman plans to continue working in the lab and for the Dean's Office at Montclair's College of Science and Mathematics before pursuing a PhD program. She aims to publish more papers and host another Women in STEM Summit while taking time to rest and establish positive routines.
The University will celebrate its graduates at Commencement exercises on May 7 and May 8, 2025, at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
