Montclair State University has announced the establishment of the Center for Latino Heritage and Spanish Language Excellence (CLaSE). This initiative is a first in New Jersey, focusing on serving Latino, Hispanic, and Spanish-speaking communities.
The center aims to support both academic and personal growth for Latino and Spanish-speaking students. It also seeks to build relationships with Latin American Indigenous communities in New Jersey and New York. CLaSE will be a platform to celebrate the cultural heritage and contributions of these communities.
CLaSE will function as a hub for academic growth, cultural celebration, and community engagement. The center is part of Montclair's efforts to enhance multicultural awareness and global competencies. Students can expect tailored support, mentorship programs, and cultural activities aimed at their academic, professional, and personal development.
Antonella Calarota-Ninman directs CLaSE, which operates within the Department of Spanish and Latino Studies at Montclair's College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The center offers resources to students, faculty, staff, administrators, and off-campus collaborators. Its initiatives focus on bilingualism, cultural diversity, and reciprocity.
Key programs include a Spanish Writing Center for academic writing support; certificates in Spanish for various careers starting fall 2025; an Oral History Program (HOLA) that preserves Latino stories; the Latin American Indigenous Collaborative (LAIC); and informal Spanish conversation meet-ups called HABLAMOS ESPAÑOL.
"Through CLaSE, we aim to cultivate a vibrant and inclusive environment that celebrates the Spanish language as a valuable asset," said Calarota-Ninman. "We are thrilled to embark on this journey together to establish a welcoming space that honors the voices, cultures, and experiences of our Latino, Spanish-speaking, and Indigenous communities."
In addition to CLaSE, Montclair State University offers several other programs through its Office for Hispanic Initiatives. These include the Hispanic Student College Institute (HSCI), scholarships, internships, fellowships for Hispanic students, pre-college programs, an alumni network (HLAN), and events during Hispanic Heritage Month.
