Montclair State University students shared their experiences and insights about living on campus, providing valuable tips for prospective residents. The students interviewed include Minyae McKenzie, a senior majoring in Social Media and Public Relations; Navila Gomez, a senior majoring in Business Administration; and Danny DeRonde, a sophomore majoring in Exercise Science.

McKenzie emphasized the importance of condensing belongings: "You aren’t going to have as much room as you think." She suggested packing minimally and opting for practical items such as steamers over irons.

Gomez advised making the most of every moment: "Living on campus truly feels like living in your own little world with friends." She also recommended limiting clothing and school supplies to essentials.

DeRonde highlighted the significance of being open during the initial week: "Since it’s all freshmen everyone’s in the same awkward, scared, out-of-place feeling so it’s easier to relate and make friends."

When asked about missing home, McKenzie mentioned home-cooked meals and parental reminders. Gomez missed spending time with her sisters but made efforts to stay connected through calls. DeRonde compensated by dining with friends at the campus dining halls.

Each student noted unique features of their residence halls. McKenzie and Gomez appreciated The Village's outdoor pool, while DeRonde valued having air conditioning and a private bathroom after moving from Bohn Hall.

The students also shared practical hacks for campus life. McKenzie recommended socializing at the Student Center. Gomez found night walks helpful for stress relief. DeRonde suggested late-night eateries like Yella’s or the Red Hawk Diner for food after 11 p.m.

Regarding getting to know roommates, McKenzie encouraged early communication and shared activities. Gomez advocated for doing things together like gym visits or meals. DeRonde recommended casual outings such as walks or dining hall visits.

On managing chores, McKenzie stressed sticking to a cleaning schedule despite life's interruptions. Gomez emphasized mutual assistance among roommates. DeRonde noted that while his room could get messy occasionally, it remained manageable.

Addressing misconceptions about dorm life, Gomez expressed surprise at how Montclair felt like a second home rather than becoming tiresome. DeRonde debunked the notion that Montclair was a suitcase school with limited weekend activities.

The best advice received included filling out roommate agreements (McKenzie), getting involved on campus (Gomez), and maintaining an open mind (DeRonde).
