Every single Republican committee member votes to keep in place the tax deduction cap crushing regular Americans
Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09), New Jersey’s only member of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, on June 13 offered an amendment during a committee hearing to provide relief from the burdensome state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap imposed by Republicans in 2017. The SALT amendment Pascrell offered was modeled after H.R. 3098, a bill authored by several New York and California Republican congressmembers. Ways and Means Republicans voted against their plan, blocking and killing Pascrell’s amendment.
“Over five years ago, Republicans rammed through a cash giveaway to millionaires paid for by middle class New Jerseyans and other Americans,” said Congressman Pascrell. “When Republicans did it, they bragged it would hurt states like ours. In that, they have succeeded. So on June 13 I offered commonsense relief to reverse Republicans’ cruelty modeled nearly word-for-word on a proposal offered by several Republicans themselves. Nevertheless, Republicans now blocked our effort. Contrary to the propaganda and lies out there, the state and local tax deduction crushed by Republicans broadly benefits middle class Americans and funds basic community services. The SALT cap should be removed. Regular Americans cry out for tax relief. Every Republican member of the Ways and Means Committee has ignored their pleas.”
Pascrell’s amendment raises and extends the SALT deduction cap to $60,000 for single filers and $120,000 for joint filers from 2023 through 2032. By doubling the cap for joint filers, the amendment addresses the damaging marriage penalty. The amendment also indexes the cap to inflation annually.
Since the passage of the Republican Tax Scam in late 2017, Congressman Pascrell has led efforts in the House to remove the SALT cap and restore tax fairness for millions of regular Americans. Every one of his efforts to restore tax fairness has been blocked by Republicans.
