Montclair State University has introduced new versions of its mascots, Rocky the Red Hawk and his sister Roxy, with a more animated and friendly appearance. Vanessa Fingerlin, a former performer as Rocky, described the new look as "more cartoony and friendlier." Team Rocky Advisor Hannah Lindeblad highlighted the improved animation of the mascots' eyes and their enhanced performance capabilities.
Roxy also received an upgrade. Fingerlin noted that she looks "adorable" and anticipates positive reception from the campus community. The official debut for the revamped mascots will take place at Montclair Township’s 4th of July Parade, with additional appearances planned throughout the summer and fall.
The Student Government Association (SGA) approved $30,000 for three new costumes and accessories. SGA Executive President Mikayla Houston praised the new designs for adding character to Rocky and Roxy.
The updated suits are lighter, more breathable, and designed to allow greater movement. Both mascots now have personalized jerseys, with Rocky having two outfits in red and white while Roxy sports a pleated skirt. Additional features include red eyeshadow for Roxy.
Lindeblad led the makeover project over two years of research. She emphasized student safety as a primary concern when presenting to the SGA for funding. Vice President for Student Development and Campus Life Dawn Meza Soufleris expressed her satisfaction with the new designs, crediting Cindy Meneghin's vision in fostering school spirit through strong mascot identities.
